Dia dhuit, hello friends! I’m Ellen, an Irish solo traveller, nature lover, creatrix, yoga teacher, guide and many other weird and wonderful things.
My love for travelling was born as a child on family holidays in Europe and trips around Ireland. As a child I loved nature and I could recognise how special it was to experience new cultures. From driving on the opposite side of the road, the little markets, exotic ice cream flavours and the landscapes as you drove in a new car for the week.
The excuse to spend time with family which felt rare as both my parents worked very hard and full time. Of course the weird and silly games that are birthed with my brother and sister on the way to the airport, at the beach or as we walked through town while my parents decided where to eat. Anything to entertain ourselves. At that time, spending hours and hours in the pool or the sea was my dream. I still remember using my dad as a surf board as he held his breath swimming along the bottom of the pool, fighting with my siblings to see who could surf the longest. This thrill and excitement continued into my teenage years.
I started working every weekend when I was sixteen. Any money I earned, I would spend on travelling. Travelling with friends was something I always dreamt of when I was growing up and I was always the person trying to convince them to join after I thoughtfully curated and researched everything down to a T. They simply couldn’t say no! We explored cities all over Europe. London, Manchester, Santa Ponza, Crete in Greece, Liverpool, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Budapest and the list goes on!
Slowly but surely, life as young adults got busy and trying to convince people to join me was getting more difficult! My disappointment and frustration grew and I was tired of people saying no, because then I would miss out! and so my solo adventures began.
This was the best decision I ever made, and honestly, I would argue travelling alone is more enjoyable. Since then I have solo travelled Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, India and the list continues. I am excited to inspire people to do the same while saving you a lot of time by sharing all my favourite spots!
Enjoy the pictures below of my first solo trip to Lisbon and the latest to India!
